Services

With the growth of the EMBL Monterotondo campus both in terms of groups and numbers of staff members working on the campus, we recognized a need for specified services to assist the scientists to better achieve success. We currently host five services: the Monoclonal Antibody Core Facility, the Mouse Phenotyping Service, the Transgenic Facility, the Gene Expression Service and the Histology Service.

EMBL has always been at the forefront of technology development because of the close collaboration between researchers and engineering staff which allows the development of tools that serve the constantly changing needs of science.

The Monoclonal Antibody Core Facility [MACF] was established to provide a service for EMBL researchers and EMBO Young Investigators, while continuously advancing the technology. Their mission is to quickly produce high-affinity antibodies in a high-throughput manner while concentrating on quality of product and of service. The MACF manages over 200 projects per year with an annual theoretical capacity of up to 400 projects.

The Mouse Phenotyping Service provides centralized support and services to EMBL investigators, developing and studying animal models and their relevance to human diseases.

The Gene Expression Service provides DNA targeting constructs primarily for downstream mice work. This service does not use conventional cloning exercises but rather alters the DNA molecules by homologous recombination [Red/ET recombination].

The Transgenic Facility was established to offer the EMBL institutes and European scientific community the opportunity to expand the research into mouse models. Specific services offered are the production of transgenic mice, rederivations, creation of knock-out mice, and the cryopreservation of new mouse strains.

Access to other local EMBL services is provided through a Visitors Programme that allows scientists to come to EMBL to use the facilities, to learn new techniques and to find out about the latest technological advances in areas such as electron microscopy and imaging.
